It's a slasher that really walks the walk

I see a lot of horror — I'm not as dedicated as some of my colleagues, but I consider myself relatively well-versed in the genre and conditioned by the depth of depravity it sometimes explores.

I've also been known to enjoy gory movies, even outside of horror. I'm well documented on this particular subject, especially when it comes to action movies, where full gore is rare but can add extra stakes and elements of surprise to a particularly intense fight. But nothing has come close to the visceral reaction I had in response to a particularly brutal moment in the new experimental slasher film In a Violent Nature. The scene, and my reaction to it, shocked me.

From Canadian writer-director Chris Nash (ABC's of Death 2's "Z Is for Zygote" segment), In a Violent Nature combines a Friday the 13th-style slasher with the slow motion of directors like Terrence Malick . The 94-minute film, which premiered at Sundance in January and opens in theaters on May 31, follows the silent killer's point of view. The film is filled with long, unbroken shots behind the killer's shoulder as he walks through quiet woods and fields, stalking his prey. There is no music. It's a deconstruction and reinvention of the slasher genre, which for the most part works very well. It is atmospheric and atmospheric. The deliberate pace makes the gore pops hit even harder.
