Brighton-based ISP and hosting provider Fastnet has emerged from a trying week that saw it battle VMware/Broadcom technical issues that have brought down a number of its customers' websites.

Messing with DNS records

The outage began on August 13, when Fastnet said its technical team was engaged "at the highest level with the provider" and was working as quickly as possible to restore services.

Fastnet turned its website into a rolling live blog with progress updates, posting a new one about every two hours during weekdays. However, the company didn't reveal much in the way of technical details about the outage, only attributing the woes to its VMware hosting platform.

"Fastnet is currently experiencing a large, widespread service outage across our VMware hosting platform, affecting users with services involving these products," their website said for part of last week. "This includes web/email/DNS hosting including cPanel services, Virtual Data Center and some other infrastructure dependent services. Connectivity, DSL and Ethernet services are not affected.
