Fast Ethernet can handle speeds up to 100 Mbps. This is faster than many broadband connections and more than enough for many people’s local network use.

Fast Ethernet (IEEE 802.3u) has a maximum data rate of 100 Mbps and is the first Ethernet standard created specifically to operate in a star wired bus topology. Fast Ethernet standards for fiber include 100Base-FX, 100Base-SX, 100Base-BX10 and 100Base-LX10.

Fast Ethernet: 100 Mbps The Fast Ethernet standard (IEEE 802.3u) was a marked improvement over Ethernet, raising the transmission speed from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps and improving its error detection and correction rates.

A gigabit switch operates in the same manner, only at data rates much greater than standard or Fast Ethernet. If a switch says “Gigabit”, it really means the same thing as 10/100/1000, because Gigabit switches support all three speed levels and will auto-switch to the appropriate one when something is plugged in.

Again, you won’t get that theoretical speed, but you should be getting anywhere from 70 to 115 MBps depending on the type of files you are transferring and your network setup.

100Base-T uses two pairs of wires in at least Category 5 UTP cable, while 100Base-TX requires two pairs in Category 6. 100Base-T4 uses all four wire pairs in older Category 3 cables.

Actually, 10/100 is sufficient for internet browsing and Netflix. But if you will be doing more than one thing with your network connection, such as file transfers, or the set-top box, I would recommend you go with the Gigabit switch.
