The higher the dpi the better the resolution and the better copy/print quality. For example, 1200 X 1200 dpi will give you better resolution or copy/print quality than 600 X 600 dpi, thus giving you better copy/print quality and better half tones.

Resolution indicates the quality of the printed output. A higher number of dots generally result in better quality. This being said, a 1200 X 1200 DPI is better than 2400 x 600.

For the average photographer, 1200 dpi is excellent. These specs are within reach of most printers on the market. When a printer prints above 1200 dpi, it’s nearly impossible to see any difference in the prints. Professional photographers who want a higher resolution should look at 2880 by 1440 dpi or higher.

Is 1200 dpi too much? For me 1200 DPI is way too high, however high DPI is the standard for most FPS players. If you have a lot of space to work with then i suggest lowering your DPI to 800, however if you’re comfortable than 1200 DPI then go for it.

600 is a lot of pixels to live in just one inch, which is why 600ppi images will look very crisp and detailed. It’s much easier for image editing applications, like Photoshop, to discard any unwanted image information (reducing the size of an image) than it is to create new pixel information (enlarge an image).

Technically, 4800 dots translates to more detail, but there will probably not be a noticeable difference unless you’re doing microprinting. 1200 dpi provides a lot of printed detail, and 2400 is probably above the threshold of what the human eye can detect. Printing at 4800 dpi is probably overkill in that regard.

A 1200 dpi scanner takes 1200 color samples per inch (creates 1200 pixels per inch) horizontally from the width being scanned. A 1200 dpi CCD sensor really cannot do anything else but scan at 1200 dpi.

Around 300 pixels per inch is an optimum and proper printing goal for photographs. 200 dpi can sometimes be acceptable printing quality, but more than 300 dpi is not of much use to printers (for color photos).

Using 150 DPI gives printed images a good quality, but if you want to get good image quality, you should use 300 DPI (or even 600). Sometimes you need to go to a lower DPI, because all other image parameters (the number of megabytes, and the sizes in height and width) with decreasing DPI also decrease. You can also reduce DPI without changing the height and width of the image. Saving the height and width of the image is possible only when you lower the DPI.

Printer and scanner maker Hewlett-Packard recommends that you scan photographs at a resolution of at least 300 dpi. According to them, a 300 dpi resolution is enough to be able to make a good quality print from the scanned file.
