6061 nearly always has the edge over 7075 when it comes to fabricating the two aluminum alloy types. This is mostly due to 6061 having a lower hardness and tensile strength. The lower hardness allows it to be machined more easily than 7075. The lower tensile strength means that 6061 is easier to form than 7075.

Grade 6082 is the most common grade of commercial aluminium sections & plates, whilst T6 is the most common temper. Grade 6063 is a medium strength alloy, it is the most common grade of aluminium for extruding.

When choosing an aluminum grade, consider if the following are important factors:

1. Formability or Workability.
2. Weldability.
3. Machining.
4. Corrosion Resistance.
5. Heat Treating.
6. Strength.
7. Typical end use applications.

Myth: “Titanium is stronger than aluminum.” It depends on the alloy, but 7075-T6 aluminum has nearly double the strength-to-weight of grade 2 titanium.

A member of the 7000 series, it is one of the strongest alloys available and is comparable to many types of steel. Although it has high strength, it has lower corrosion resistance than other common aluminum alloys and does not offer the same levels of machinability or weldability.

It is a common material used in competition yo-yos as well. Due to its high strength, low density, thermal properties, and its ability to be highly polished, 7075 is widely used in mold tool manufacturing. This alloy has been further refined into other 7000 series alloys for this application, namely 7050 and 7020.

7050 Aluminum Although the mechanical properties of 7050 are similar to 7075, there are some variations. First, 7050 T7451 offers better stress corrosion cracking resistance and corrosion resistance. Also, toughness than alloy 7075. Compared to other aerospace alloys, 7050 is less quench sensitive.
