They are the quintessential “one-person dog,” loyal to their owner and eager to please, making them easy to train. They are not known to be “Velcro dogs,” that is, dogs who follow their owners around all day. The Pomeranian is an excellent watchdog.

Pomeranians get along with just about everyone. One of the nice things about the sociable Pomeranian temperament is that these little guys get along so well with each other as well as other animals. They tend to be very active, happy little dogs that enjoy playing and cuddling.

Pomeranians are good dogs for first-time dog owners. They’re sweet, affectionate little dogs that love to be around their owners and be social. They require a minimum of two walks a day to be happy and get their exercise needs met. While they shed, regular brushing and grooming can help keep their fur under control.

Male Pomeranians, as many have said, tend to be more affectionate, playful, and exuberant. Compared to female Pomeranians, male Poms are less moody and more compassionate towards their owners. They are also more respectful to their human family, making them more obedient than their female counterparts.

The Pomeranian is a loyal family member, even if that family includes a cat. They don’t mind sharing sun puddles, water bowls, and (occasionally) your love with feline friends.

They can be feisty and prone to attack other dogs, even larger ones, and may succumb to panic attacks when frightened. Separation anxiety is often seen in Poms. They are one of the few breeds of dog that is not recommended for families with small children; however, may be a good choice for an elderly person.

However, at the end of the day, Pomeranians are simply vocal dogs, so if you cannot tolerate a little barking, the Pomeranian is probably not the breed for you. Likewise, if you live in an apartment and your neighbors are sensitive to noise, a Pomeranian might not be the best choice for your lifestyle.

After the AKC recognized the breed in 1900, Pomeranians quickly grew in popularity in the United States. In 1909, the American Pomeranian Club was accepted as a member club of the AKC and designated as the Parent Club for the breed. By mid-century, Poms were one of the most popular dog breeds in America.
