Like it’s been explained in Erin’s answer, an hour is divided by 4 periods of 15 minutes. It is called a quarter because 15 minutes is 1/4th of 60 minutes. So it is a quarter of an hour. This is also visibly seen on a clock face.

At minute 45, we say it’s “quarter to” the next hour. For example, at 5:45, we say it’s “quarter to six” (or 15 minutes before 6:00).

When teaching half past the hour we can use the following steps:

1. If the longer minutes hand points at the 6, then the time is half past the hour.
2. Look at the shorter hour hand and read the two numbers on the clock face that this hand is in between.
3. The time is half past the smaller of these two hours.

1. Pupils should be taught to tell the time to the hour and half past the hour and draw the hands on a clock face to show these times.
2. Pupils use the language of time, including telling the time throughout the day, first using o’clock and then half past.

“half-hour” is commonly written with a dash (hyphen) and is a distinct word in the dictionary. So, “a half-hour” = 30 minutes = “half an hour”. In Australia we say ‘half an hour’. You might hear ‘a half hour’, but it would sound stilted.
