It is set in the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in North West Wiltshire. The lower part of the village was protected by a 12th century Castle. It was a Motte and Bailey designed Castle. The Castle was built by the de Dunstanville family during the wars of Stephen in about 1140.

History. The village takes its name from the 12th-century castle which stood about 1⁄3 mile (500 m) to the north. Only the earthworks are still visible since the castle was abandoned in the late 1300s.
