Irish is a Celtic language (as English is a Germanic language, French a Romance language, and so on). This means that it is a member of the Celtic family of languages. Its “sister” languages are Scottish Gaelic and Manx (Isle of Man); its more distant “cousins” are Welsh, Breton and Cornish.

Why are Celtic languages so different from English? Because the Celtic and Germanic branches of the Indo-European family of languages separated from each other (that is, began to develop differently) more than 4,000 years ago.

Modern Celts do have a written language, in fact they have several since there are five Celtic languages in everyday use, and a sixth in the process of being revived.

Éabha joined Celtic Woman in July 2015. Éabha replaced Lisa Lambe in the ensemble. She remained in the group until 22 January 2020, when it was announced she was taking a leave to pursue her own projects.
