Contrary to Popular Belief, the Problem isn’t that Students Receive No Civics Education. All 50 states require some form of instruction in civics and/or government, and nearly 90 percent of students take at least one civics class.

In order to answer these questions, a new typology of the term civic education shall be presented, encompassing four main aspects: Political Knowledge, Normative Values, Individualistic Civic Behavior and Communal Civic Behavior.

Civic education empowers us to be well-informed, active citizens and gives us the opportunity to change the world around us. It is a vital part of any democracy, and equips ordinary people with knowledge about our democracy and our Constitution.

Civic Education: Civic comes from the Latin word civics, meaning “relating to a citizen”, Civic Education (also known as citizen education or democracy education) can be broadly defined as the provision of information and learning experiences to equip and empower citizens to participate in democratic processes.

Values signify norms and behavioural traits which are generally accepted as being of great worth in the society. Values are precepts, moral principles, ideas and beliefs which people hold dearly and cherish, e.g. honesty, contentment, faithfulness, justice, tolerance, fair play and so on.

Your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work. When the things that you do and the way you behave match your values, life is usually good – you’re satisfied and content. But when these don’t align with your personal values, that’s when things feel… wrong.

Here are some examples of core values from which you may wish to choose:

• Loyalty.
• Commitment.
• Open-mindedness.
• Consistency.
• Honesty.
• Efficiency.

There are lots of personal values examples. My 5 most important values are Family, Freedom, Adventure, Authenticity, and Wisdom. Your most important personal values might be love, financial security, knowledge, creativity, personal growth, or any combination of all of the values in the world.

Love – that can include patience, kindness, forgiveness, trust, selflessness, compassion and protection. Integrity – which can incorporate honesty, truthfulness, responsibility, reliability, dependability, consistency, decency, justice, sincerity and commitment.

Here are some guidelines in developing core values:

1. Keep the list of values to between five and seven. They need to be memorable to your staff.
2. Create phrases, but not paragraphs.
3. Make these values specific, not generic.
4. Values need to be shared.
5. If it’s already stated in your mission, do not repeat it.

Our values are important because they help us to grow and develop. They help us to create the future we want to experience. Every individual and every organization is involved in making hundreds of decisions every day. That purpose is the satisfaction of our individual or collective (organizational) needs.
