Cleveland had the highest poverty rate among large U.S. cities in 2019, overtaking Detroit, according to data released by the U.S. Census bureau last week. Cleveland remained dead last among large cities in child poverty, with 46.1% of children in the city living in poverty in 2019.

According to the 2019 census estimate, the ethnic and racial composition of Cleveland was 40% white (33.8% non-Hispanic white), 48.8% African American, 0.5% Native American, 2.6% Asian, and 4.4% from two or more races.

Cleveland Demographic shifts like out-migration tend to exacerbate adverse socioeconomic conditions, which themselves often accelerate population decline. Like other cities with shrinking populations, Cleveland’s violent crime rate of 1,557 incidents for every 100,000 people is among the highest in the country.

New study ranks Cleveland as one of the 20 least safe cities in America. According to WalletHub, Cleveland ranks 162 out of 182 cities in their 2020 ‘Safest Cities in America’ study.

In 2019, more than 114,000 people lived in poverty in Cleveland, including 37,700 children and nearly 12,000 older adults. Cleveland remained dead last among large cities in child poverty, with 46.1 percent of children in the city living in poverty in 2019.

The city proper, with an estimated 2019 population of 381,009, ranks as the 53rd-largest city in the U.S., as a larger portion of the metropolitan population lives outside the central city. The seven-county metropolitan Cleveland economy, which includes Akron, is the largest in the state.

Violent crime increased overall, though, with 5,869 reports, according to police. There were 5,462 violent crimes reported in 2019. Non-violent crimes declined overall, with 18,422 in 2020 compared to 20,482 in 2019. Reports of burglaries and theft both decreased, but there were increases in auto thefts and arson.
