The best way to start is Dubliners, a collection of realistic short stories that depict the life of ordinary people in the Irish capital. He has the reputation of being the most difficult prose writer of all time, and that reputation is not without reason. However it shouldn’t scare you.

Although the main strength of Ulysses lies in its depth of character portrayal and its breadth of humour, the book is most famous for its use of a variant of the interior monologue known as the stream-of-consciousness technique.

Ulysses is rightly regarded as a masterpiece. The intellect required to devise such characters, and also to convey their every thought, is phenomenal.

Anyone can read Ulysses, few will understand all of it. I read it when I was fourteen. It was the hardest thing I’d read up to that point, but it is doable if the reader is motivated.
