Goldfish Biology The first thing to know: there is no such thing as a pregnant goldfish. These fish do not carry live young within them until gestation, and they do not give birth to live fish. Goldfish are an egg-laying species.

Late May through early June is when the first spawn of the summer usually takes place, and the spawning activities occur daily until all the females have laid eggs. Goldfish fry can be seen throughout the summer and even into the early fall if the weather has been particularly hot during that time.

Some would try to make you believe that a pregnant goldfish is called a twit, or a twerp. In reality there is no term for a pregnant goldfish because goldfish never get pregnant! Female Goldfish lay eggs and the eggs are fertilised by male fish outside of the body.

Goldfish will eat their eggs, or eat the fry after they hatch. As soon as you notice eggs, remove the parents from the tank and transfer them somewhere else until the goldfish are grown. You can also remove the eggs from the tank and transfer.

As examples, the female swordtail and guppy will both give birth to anywhere from 20 to 100 live young after a gestation period of four to six weeks, and mollies will produce a brood of 20 to 60 live young after a gestation of six to 10 weeks.

Sometimes the female fish will carry the fertilized eggs in her mouth, or the male and female will trade off, which is called biparental mouthbrooding. Typically fish that are born via mouthbrooding are underweight at first and require recovery time to feed and grow.

It is possible to raise baby fish in your main tank, but generally, few will survive this. Larger fish will see them as tasty snacks and even vegetarian fish may be tempted. They can also suffer injuries from being chased and bullied.

Hard boiled egg yolks are another old standby, often used to feed fish fry and baby livebearers. The particles of yolk can make the water cloudy if overused, but many small fish (and shrimps) seem to go wild for egg yolk, so it’s a worthwhile treat now and again.

These are some of contradictory food items that do not go together: Milk, buttermilk, honey, urad dal and sprout grains shouldn’t be eaten with fish.

Vegetables and Fruit You can feed your fish blanched vegetables such as zucchini, peas, lettuce and spinach. Vegetables are full of the minerals and vitamins that herbivorous fish need. You can also feed your fish small amounts of fruit including apples and pears.

Do fish eat humans? A single fish eating an entire human being is highly unlikely. But a Great White Shark or a Tiger Shark can eat a person in just several bites. It is also possible that a group of sharks can eat a person or a corpse in the water.

Some fruits and vegetables can be fed raw to the fish, but most vegetables should be blanched prior to being offered to your fish. The fruits and vegetables that are generally alright to serve raw are bananas, plantains, pumpkins, pears, apples, carrots, potatoes and sweet potatoes.
