‘ Bat poop is not currently used in any area of the beauty industry. Mascara is one of many cosmetic products that contain a colorant called guanine. This crystalline material is found in bat poop, but the stuff used in mascara is actually derived from fish scales.

It’s often called the “gold of the sea.” Whales either pass the substance along with their feces, or they can occasionally cough it up if there is a blockage. Not only is the unique scent of ambergris often used in perfumes, it is sometimes eaten and considered a delicacy.

Some sperm whales produce ambergris — a clump of squid beaks and fatty secretions that scientists believe exits through the whales’ bowels. Some high-end perfumes use ambergris for a chemical it contains called ambrien, which suspends smells in the air, and for its own unique scent.
