The usual rank of a jack is between the ten and the queen. As the lowest face (or “court”) card, the jack often represents a minimum standard — for example, many poker games require a minimum hand of a pair of jacks (“jacks or better”) in order to open wagering.

Hearts is an easier game to play, although the games are similar. The reason it’s easier than Spades is because Spades requires bidding. Hearts will teach young players what a “trick” is, a concept used in Spades and Bridge. Spades is just more complicated because there are two parts to the game.

War can be played with more than two players (a relief to my grandmother, I’m sure). It is pretty much the same game for more than two, but, obviously, each player starts with fewer cards. Each player should have an equal number of cards. If you have three players, deal out 17 cards each.

In this case a war game will rarely go on forever. One flaw in the rules is this, and I just played it with my daughter. I had 6 cards left, the next play were 2 kings (doesn’t really matter) so we layed our cards down and we both turn up 3’s another war.

Three- and Four-Way Speed With four players, it is often more interesting to use two decks of cards shuffled together.

Spit is similar to the game Speed in the sense that players attempt to get rid of all their cards first. The difference between Spit and Speed is in the arrangement of the stock piles. In Spit, each player has a row of piles, usually five, each with the top card face up.

Hand and Foot is typically played as a partner game, partners sit across from each other at the table. Choose one pair to deal first. They must shuffle the cards then one person takes the deck. The dealer proceeds to deal each player a stack of 13 cards and pass them clockwise until each player has a hand.

To do this, turn one card face up, then place four face-down cards to the right of it, not touching each other. Next, turn the second card along face up and put a card face down on the next three. Continue until the final card on the right has a face-up card with four face-down cards beneath it.

A player may only use one hand to move a card and may only play one card at a time. Many times both players can play a card on the same pile.

• Slap Jack. The goal of the card game Slap Jack is to win the most cards by being the first player to slap a jack when it is played.
• Speed. The object of the card game Speed is simple: be the first person to get rid of all of your cards.

Dutch Blitz Rules: Dutch Blitz has four decks of cards with 40 cards in each deck. The game can be played with two, three or four players. Each deck of cards has a different picture/design on it: plow, pail, carriage and pump.

Ligretto is a card game for two to twelve players. The game is similar to Dutch Blitz, which is based upon the original 1960s Ligretto.

If at any point a player cannot make another move and their play halts, they can take the top card from the Wood Pile (prior to a re-deal) and place it on the bottom, thereby resetting the cards.

There are some similarities to Dutch Blitz, too, in that players are building up stacks of cards in sequence. But everyone has to take turns with Skip-Bo so it’s not as crazy as Dutch Blitz (and that could be good or bad depending on your gaming mood). The basic point is to get rid of the cards in your own stock pile.
