The KAP 140 Autopilot System is a rate based digital autopilot system offering smooth performance and enhanced features found only in more expensive autopilots.

The KAP 140 started in most R models as a single axis autopilot, having only heading control. While flying an ILS approach, the autopilot controls everything but the rudder. It captures the glide slope and the localizer and flies the approach all the way down.

Roll rate information is derived from the turn coordinator. Roll axis functions include a basic wing leveler (ROL), heading select (HDG), and VOR/LOC intercept and tracking, which can also track a GPS course. Pitch information is derived from a pressure sensor and accelerometer.

a vertical mode specifically for capturing altitudes, called Selected Altitude. Capture (indicated by an ALTS annunciation). During level-off, the active vertical mode will transition from the climb/descent mode, to the. altitude capture mode, and then to ALT mode.

ALT. DN. 1. The autopilot will engage in ROL (roll) and VS (vertical speed) modes. In ROL mode, the autopilot will maintain wings level, however, due to left turning tendencies, it may NOT maintain HDG.

Autopilot is a flight-control system that allows a pilot to fly an airplane without continuous hands-on control. A modern automatic flight-control system is made of three main parts: a flight-monitoring computer, several high-speed processors, and a series of sensors placed on different parts of the plane.

Can a plane take-off automatically? No. Commercial passenger jets are not able to take-off automatically.

A two-axis autopilot controls an aircraft in the pitch axis as well as roll. A three-axis autopilot adds control in the yaw axis and is not required in many small aircraft. Again, mission profile should play a large part in deciding which autopilot to buy.

There is the basic autopilot that is found in the Cessna 172 and Baron B58 and there is an advanced autopilot which has more features and controls all the airliners: Airbus A320, Boeing B737, Boeing B747, C90GTx King Air, Learjet LJ45 and Dash8-Q400.

The Bendix/King KAP 140 2 Axis Autopilot provides the following modes of operation: 1. Roll (ROL) mode – keeps the wings level. 2. Vertical Speed (VS) mode – holds the climb or descent rate at the moment the autopilot is engaged or a manually-set climb or descent rate.

It uses the typical Bendix/King servos, but the system relies on conventional DGs and turn coordinators provided by other manufacturers, not the specialized attitude gyros found in higher-priced Bendix/King autopilots. The KAP 140 offers roll modes of heading select, nav and approach, as well as back course. If you have a two-axis system, you get vertical speed hold as well as altitude capture and hold. In approach mode, the KAP 140 will track glideslope. One feature in the KAP 140 and in the newer KFC 225 that tickles us are the vocal alerts.
