Wealthy urban elites, who are mostly of Spanish ancestry, have traditionally dominated political and economic life, whereas most Bolivians are low-income subsistence farmers, miners, small traders or artisans.

Cocaine consumption and trafficking are illegal in Bolivia which can lead to you seeing the inside of a jail cell for a very long time. Travel to and within Copacabana is advised to be done during daylight hours. Bus travel from Copacabana to La Paz overnight is especially dangerous and should be avoided.

Although the Bolivia crime rate is increasing, it is still one of the safest places in South America and being the cheapest, it’s popular with other travellers especially Israelis. Spanish and 36 indigenous languages are official in Bolivia per the 2009 constitution. Previously only Spanish, Aymara, and Quechua were official languages of the country. Many Indians, particularly in the cities, market towns, and new colonies, speak or understand Spanish.
