Lightning can produce X-rays and gamma radiation. When lightning strikes, electrons are accelerated to very high energies and crashing into air molecules, causing an explosion of gamma radiation, the so-called terrestrial gamma flashes. Bursts of up to a trillion gamma particles can be measured.

When the Earth (and therefore the Moon) is at its perihelion, the closest point in its orbit to the Sun, the sunlight that reflects off the Moon is slightly more intense, causing the full moon’s brightness to increase by about 4%, which is imperceptible by the human eye.

But in the 1980s and 1990s, physicists discovered that clouds on Earth also emit invisible γ-rays: as short, intense millisecond bursts and as weaker, long-lingering glows. But capturing these intense rays is not easy.

The Gamma-Ray Glow is a long-lasting (several seconds to minutes) X- and gamma radiation presumably originated from high-electric field of thunderclouds. Such glows were previously observed by aircraft, balloons, and from the ground. It lasted for 20 seconds and was abruptly terminated by a lightning flash.

Unlike the Incredible Hulk, gamma rays are not green — lying as they do beyond the visible spectrum, gamma rays have no color at all that we can describe.

Dark lightning is a burst of gamma rays produced during thunderstorms by extremely fast moving electrons colliding with air molecules. Researchers refer to such a burst as a terrestrial gamma ray flash. Dark lightning is the most energetic radiation produced naturally on Earth, but was unknown before 1991.

Different from regular lightning, dark lightning is a release of high-energy gamma radiation—sources include supernovae and supermassive black holes—that is completely invisible to the human eye. Attempts to understand this mystery haven’t turned out so well, because, like normal lightning, the bolts are fleeting..

If you did happen to shower during a thunderstorm and lightning struck, you could be at risk of passing out, getting burns from the heat of the water, numbness and tingling, having your heart stop, or even dying, Kman says.

“Ron Holle, a former meteorologist with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration who tracks lightning injuries, estimates that 10 to 20 people in the US are shocked annually while bathing, using taps or handling appliances during storms.” Of 240 people struck by lightning in the US in 2012, 28 were killed.

“You can’t contain the bad bacteria if you don’t shower,” the site explains. “And if they find their way to your eyes, nose, or mouth, you can get sick.” Bacteria is also the cause of body odour. In fact, the gasses given off by bacteria can reportedly lead to around 30 nasty smells from one body.

This would happen most in places where your body produces the most oils, such as your underarms, behind the ears, on the neck and under a woman’s breasts.

You Can’t Contain Bad Bacteria So, when you skip that shower, you’re letting a day go by where your body is not strengthening your skin’s good bacteria, making it more susceptible to harmful bacteria. When you go yet another day without bathing, it only adds to your chances of being vulnerable to bad bacteria.
