Evading arrest on foot (sometimes called flight) is committed by knowingly running away from an officer to escape capture, detention, or arrest. Obstructing justice is committed when someone knowingly hinders or interferes with a police officer when the officer is performing official duties.

Can I Walk Away? Unless a police officer has “probable cause” to make an arrest, “reasonable suspicion” to conduct a “stop and frisk,” or a warrant, a person generally has the legal right to walk away from the officer.

Evading a police officer under Section 2800.1 is a misdemeanor crime. You can be fined up to $1,000 and sent to jail for 1 year. If you serve a lesser sentence, you might be on probation for a period of time.

• Homelessness. The longer young people stay on or around the streets, the more detached they become from society.
• Crime.
• Mental health problems.

What to Do When Your Teen Runs Away

1. Search your house and make sure your teen is not hiding somewhere.
2. Call the police right away.
3. Request the investigators to put your child in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) Missing Persons File.

To help locate a runaway shelter, call the National Runaway Safeline at 1-800-RUNAWAY anytime. They will respond via phone, text, or email. You can also search online for a listing of shelters in your area.

If you’ve already run away

1. Get support. Talk to a Childline counsellor or the Runaway Helpline for confidential support and advice.
2. Go somewhere safe. This could be a relative, police station or a friend you feel safe with.
3. Know your rights.
4. Keep in contact with people.
5. Plan where to go if you’re unsafe.

If a friend is thinking about running away, talk about why. Try to work together to help your friend find solutions to his or her problems. At the same time, speak with an adult you trust as soon as possible. Tell that adult that your friend is talking seriously about running away.

Talk to a trusted adult and explain that you believe your friend ran away. Don’t be shy about sharing any information about where your friend might be going, and don’t wait in hopes that he or she might come back after a few days.

India does not have a law that criminalizes running away from home. However, anti-begging laws may have the effect of penalizing runaway youth for being homeless (see Question 1. Bahraini laws on nationality are very restrictive and a child cannot easily apply for citizenship.

You can leave home without your parents’ or guardians’ consent at the age of 16. If your parents are worried, they can apply to the Family Court to put you under the guardianship of the Court where the Court can make major decisions for you until you are 18.

There are many less serious concerns that lead to kids running away from school, but truancy sometimes results from involvement with drugs, alcohol or sexual activity. It can also reflect experiences of bullying and social rejection or neglect, whether from teachers, peers or both.

Is it illegal to run away from home? It is against the law in Texas for a child to run away from home. It is considered a status offense, not a criminal offense, meaning it would not be an offense if committed by an adult.
