Onyx is a unique natural stone that originates from dripstone deposits of limestone caves. When water drips from stalactites and stalagmites within these caves and evaporates a compound called calcium carbonate is left behind. This causes the stone’s colorful veins, swirls, and patterns that are unique to onyx.

Onyx is first mentioned in the Book of Genesis: “And the gold of that land is good: there is bdellium and the onyx stone” (2:12). The onyx was to be placed on the fourth row of the breastplate, along with a beryl stone and jasper and they were to be encased in gold.

Onyx is not a good option for most countertops, but it does make for a beautiful backsplash. Its beauty and translucence make it appealing, but still not practical. Onyx is also quite brittle and will chip and crack easily. You might have noticed the onyx used in celebrity chef Emeril’s kitchen set.

Onyx has an exotic and fragile appearance that can compliment many modern and contemporary designs, particularly when back-lit. Cost: Around $70 – $100 per square foot installed.

Use a special stone sealer, such as MB Stone Granite Sealer or Aquamix Sealers Choice Gold, on the onyx to help prevent acid etching and staining. Clean with a soft cloth and special cleaner. Apply a special cleaner, such as Gel Gloss, to a soft cloth and then wipe it on the onyx surface. Blot up spills immediately.
