This element is a solid. Osmium is classified as a “Transition Metal” which are located in Groups 3 – 12 of the Periodic Table.

Osmium is a chemical element with symbol Os and atomic number 76. Classified as a transition metal, Osmium is a solid at room temperature.

Osmium is produced as a by-product of nickel refining. The element occurs in the mineral iridosule and in platinum-bearing river sands in the Urals, North America and South America. While there is little osmium in these products, it can be easily obtained from processed nickel ores.

Sources. Osmium occurs in iridosule and in platinum-bearing river sands in the Urals, North America, and South America. It is also found in the nickel-bearing ores of Sudbury, Ontario region along with other platinum metals.

Potassium has a density of 0.862 g/cm3 while sodium has a density of 0.971 g/cm3. All of the other metals on the periodic table are denser than water. While lithium, potassium, and sodium are all light enough to float on water, they are also highly reactive.

That’s because aluminum, in its conventional form, is denser than water, explains chemist Alexander Boldyrev from Utah State University. To their amazement, this crystal aluminum has a density of only 0.61 gram per cubic centimeter, in contrast to convention aluminum’s density of 2.7 grams per cubic centimeter.

Different materials have different densities. For example, the mass density of gold is 19.3 g/cc, lead is 11.4 g/cc, copper is 9.0 g/cc, aluminum is 2.7 g/cc, water is 1.0 g/cc (1g/cc = 1 gram per cubic centimeter). Gold is much heavier than lead.

A volume of iron has mass than an equal volume of aluminum. This mean that aluminum is more dense than iron.

Steel is essentially 250% times denser than aluminum, making it obviously heavier. And due to its high density/weight, it’s less likely to bend under force or heat.

Which block is denser? The block of brick because it has a greater mass then the block of styrofoam so its density is greater.

Depending on the materials of the blocks and the size determined there density. This is because the mass of a steel block will be different from the mass of a wood block. This is also because the volume of a steel block could be smaller than the mass of the wood block.

Density indicates how much of a substance occupies a specific volume at a defined temperature and pressure. The density of a substance can be used to define the substance. Water is unusual because when water freezes, its solid form (ice) is less dense than liquid water, and thus floats on top of liquid water.

If a substance has a higher density, it is heavier. Likewise a lighter density means it is much lighter. For example, air has a density of approximately 1.225kgm3 .

Note that density is directly proportional to the mass (or weight) and indirectly proportional to the volume: If volume stays the same as mass increases, the density will increase by the same factor. If volume stays the same as mass decreases, the density will decrease by the same factor.

Density is an intensive physical property whereas weight is an extensive property. Density changes when the pressure and temperature of an object changes, whereas the weight changes when the mass of an object and gravity changes. Gravity does not affect density whereas on the other hand gravity directly affects weight.

Density is proportional to both mass and volume.

Specific gravity is in direct relationship with density. It is the ratio of an object’s density, and its contact substance. For example, if you want to place an object in water, the specific gravity would tell you if it would float or not.
