Gasoline contains mainly alkanes (paraffins), alkenes (olefins), and aromatics. Diesel fuel consists mainly of paraffins, aromatics and naphthenes.

Gasoline is a mixture of alkanes from pentane up to about decane.

Since Alkanes are Saturated Hydrocarbons, they do not readily react. Alkanes will react with Oxygen if they are given sufficient Activation Energy. This will result in a highly Exothermic reaction, producing Carbon Dioxide and Water, which makes Alkanes very useful as fuels.

Gasoline is a refined product of petroleum consisting of a mixture of hydrocarbons, additives, and blending agents. The composition of gasolines varies widely, depending on the crude oils used, the refinery processes available, the overall balance of product demand, and the product specifications.

What Color is Petrol? Petrol is the British English version of gasoline, so therefore petrol is a clear, transparent liquid, just like gasoline.

You’ll see regular unleaded, or 91-octane, premium unleaded 95, premium unleaded 98, E10 unleaded, E85 ethanol, diesel and premium diesel. That’s a lot of choice and potential disaster considering that there are only two major fuels: unleaded petrol and diesel.

Gasoline, also spelled gasolene, also called gas or petrol, mixture of volatile, flammable liquid hydrocarbons derived from petroleum and used as fuel for internal-combustion engines. It is also used as a solvent for oils and fats.

The higher the octane number is, the more resistant the fuel is to pinging in your engine. For this reason, it’s recommended you fill high-performance cars with higher octane fuels, such as 98 premium unleaded petrol, since these cars are more likely to burn fuel consistently at higher temperatures than regular cars.

95 octane

The short answer is no. All unleaded fuel sold in the UK conforms to the same British Standards, so you shouldn’t consider supermarket fuel to be below par. However, there are small differences between fuels. These could offer subtle benefits, depending on what sort of car you drive.

BP has more proved reserves compared with Shell and has also been consistent in maintaining it’s reserves volume over the last ten years. The average proven oil and gas reserves of BP over the last ten years are approximately 20% higher compared to Shell.

A short answer – it will not. Usually, any commercially available gasoline that passes industry standards would suffice for almost any gasoline-powered vehicle. Putting a higher-octane petrol into your car will neither help nor hurt your car’s performance despite the variations among engines.

BP is targeting the trackday market by launching the highest-octane fuel on sale in the United Kingdom. BP Ultimate 102 has a RON rating of 102, higher than Tesco’s 99 RON super unleaded and Shell Optimax, which is 98 RON.

Super unleaded is the highest octane petrol that is widely available in the UK. A higher octane rating means that the fuel will tolerate greater compression (more pressure) before it ignites. Ignition under compression is known as pinking and can damage engines.

Truth is, all petrol and diesel sold in the UK must meet British Standards. That means that filling up at Tesco or Asda is just as safe for your engine as doing so at a Shell or Esso garage. Every petrol station uses a standard ‘base’ fuel. It all comes from the same UK refineries.

PREMIUM DIESEL FOR POWER? Unlike premium gasoline, which offers a higher octane rating than regular, and therefore a slight performance or economy benefit, there is no cetane rating jump with premium diesel. Engine performance will remain the same on premium diesel.

British multinational oil and gas firm BP operates the greatest number of forecourts. BP, ESSO, and Shell are the only companies to operate more than 1,000 sites. Of the so-called hypermarket-owned petrol stations, Tesco offers the most stations, at 509 as of November 2020.
