Hobart is the capital of Tasmania, one of the six states of Australia. Sometimes known as Tas or Tassie, Tasmania is an island state belonging to the country of Australia. Tasmania is not a country because it does not fulfill the definition of a country.

This ice age cause sea levels to drop so that at one point there was a continuous stretch of land from Papua New Guinea to Tasmania. This rise in sea levels created the Bass Strait and effectively separated Tasmania from the mainland.

The history of Tasmania begins at the end of the most recent ice age (approximately 10,000 years ago) when it is believed that the island was joined to the Australian mainland. Little is known of the human history of the island until the British colonisation in the 19th century.

Tasmania, the Name. In 1642 Abel Janszoon Tasman named his ‘first sighted land’ after his Dutch superior Anthony Van Diemen. The Bishopric of Tasmania was proclaimed in 1842, and anti-transportationists welcomed the name Tasmania to help counter the ‘evil reputation’ attached to convict Van Diemen’s Land.

Tasmania’s underlying problem is simple but intractable: it has developed a way of life, a mode of doing things, a demographic, a culture and associated economy, that reproduces under-achievement generation after generation. Ultimately, Tasmania doesn’t change because its people actually don’t really want to.

The best time to visit Tasmania is between December and February, Australia’s summer season. Though crowds are at their thickest and room rates at their highest, these months offer the most comfortable temperatures for enjoying the island’s abundant outdoor activities.

Below is our itinerary over the course of 10 days. Tasmania may be small but there’s so much to see. How long would we recommend? It depends what you’re coming for, but generally speaking, nothing less than 6 days if you want to see the main sights but even then you may find yourself rushing.
