In 2013, Mercedes-Benz launched their new A-Class and with it the A250 Engineered by AMG. The A250 Engineered by AMG is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that produces 208 bhp and 258 lb /ft of torque between 1200 and 4000 rpm.

The 2.0-litre petrol in the A 250 scratches the performance car itch; a 0-62mph time of 6.2 seconds and 155mph top speed puts it into hot hatch territory, and though not exactly tuneful, it sounds sporty enough.

In isolation, the A250 4Matic Sedan is a great small car. It looks sharp, drives well offering both luxurious comfort and sporty dynamics, while also offering a range of high-end features and technologies befitting of the three-pointed star badge.

The IS 250 has 17-inch wheels and a fuel economy of 24 mpg combined on the rear-wheel drive option and 23 mpg combined on the all-wheel drive. Awarded an overall five out of five stars in federal safety tests, the IS 250 is an excellent choice for a family sedan with serious style.

The A45 also has a host of extra features over the A250 Sport to justify the hefty $23,411 additional cost, including 19-inch alloys wheels, stronger brakes, leather-trimmed sports seats, heated and power adjusted front seats with memory, dual-zone air-conditioning and premium audio system.

The A 250 is not a hot hatch but it’s an appealing proposition in the premium hatchback stakes in that it offers more than adequate performance with little trade-off in refinement and comfort.

The entry-level Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 retails for $38,200. That’s roughly average for the class. The performance-oriented models are pricier, with the AMG CLA 35 starting at $47,900 and the AMG CLA 45’s MSRP reaching $55,900.

All-wheel drive is possible with this 4-door. I drove the hatchback variant, the A250 4Matic, and in its case AWD is standard equipment.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class – Renault In the A180d, under the hood is a 1.5-liter dCi Renault diesel engine, also used by Dacia and Nissan. In the premium hatch it generates 116 horsepower (86 kilowatts) and 192 pound-feet (260 Newton-meters) of torque.

Then there are the company car tax savings, which will appeal to many. With its 32g/km figure and 44-mile range, you’ll only pay tax on 8 per cent of the P11D value (or just 6 per cent for the basic AMG Line version) versus a whopping 29 per cent for a petrol A-Class.
