The Arctic Ocean is a very fresh ocean. This is because most of the Russian rivers drain to the north; also, there are large riverine inputs from North America and there are relatively fresh ocean waters that flow northward through Bering Strait from the North Pacific Ocean.

Freshly melted snow is generally considered to be safe to drink without further treatment, however it should not be assumed that because water is frozen that it is safe to drink. Exercise the same caution for melted Ice as you would for standing water, and if in doubt boil the water for 10 minutes.

The Antarctic is land surrounded by ocean. The ocean under the Arctic ice is cold, but still warmer than the ice! So the ocean warms the air a bit….Really cold, or really, really cold?

The average Arctic winter temperature is -30° F (-34°C), while the average Arctic summer temperature is 37-54° F (3-12° C). In general, Arctic winters are long and cold while summers are short and cool.

That is a part of it that makes it salty. But yes there is whale sperm in the ocean. For the record, whale sperm is not the reason why the ocean is so salty. ..the ocean water was salty because of whale sperm. That means that 360 gallons of sperm are spilled into the ocean every time one unloads.

Salt in the ocean comes from two sources: runoff from the land and openings in the seafloor. Rocks on land are the major source of salts dissolved in seawater. Rainwater that falls on land is slightly acidic, so it erodes rocks. Ocean water seeps into cracks in the seafloor and is heated by magma from the Earth’s core.

In the Norse, one day a skipper wanted to buy the hand-mill from him, and eventually persuaded him. In all versions, the new owner took it to sea and set it to grind out salt. It ground out salt until it sank the boat, and then went on grinding in the sea, turning the sea salty.

The ocean is blue because water absorbs colors in the red part of the light spectrum. Like a filter, this leaves behind colors in the blue part of the light spectrum for us to see. The ocean may also take on green, red, or other hues as light bounces off of floating sediments and particles in the water.

When sunlight hits the ocean, water absorbs the red, orange, yellow, and green wavelengths of light so that we see just the remaining wavelengths of blue and violet. If you’ve ever been out to sea, you know that the further out you go, the darker blue the water gets as it gets deeper.

The water in Bowl 2 approximates the same concentration of salt found in the ocean’s water. This is why the ocean doesn’t freeze: There’s too much salt in it. Bodies of water located farther inland like islands and rivers have less salt in them, allowing them to freeze when the temperature drops to 0 degrees Celsius.

It’s not two oceans meeting, its glacial melt water meeting the off shore waters of gulf of Alaska. The reason for this strange phenomenon is due to the difference of water density, temperature and salinity of the glacial melt water and off shore waters of gulf of Alaska, making it difficult to mix.

In water, absorption is strong in the red and weak in the blue, thus red light is absorbed quickly in the ocean leaving blue. Almost all sunlight that enters the ocean is absorbed, except very close to the coast. The red, yellow, and green wavelengths of sunlight are absorbed by water molecules in the ocean.

The Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean meet in the Gulf of Alaska, but we can say that these two oceans do not even meet together. This is because its water is never mixed into each other. The water of the Indian Ocean remains separate and that of the Pacific Ocean remains separate.
