The lithosphere is a bit confusing since it makes up both the lower part of the crust and upper part of the mantle. It is about 100 km thick and consists of the 15 major tectonic plates on Earth.

The Earth is divided into three main layers. Earth’s interior is generally divided into three major layers: the crust, the mantle, and the core.

Above the core is Earth’s mantle, which is made up of rock containing silicon, iron, magnesium, aluminum, oxygen and other minerals. The rocky surface layer of Earth, called the crust, is made up of mostly oxygen, silicon, aluminum, iron, calcium, sodium, potassium and magnesium.
