The word “there” have multiple functions. In verbal and written English, the word can be used as an adverb, a pronoun, a noun, an interjection, or an adjective. This word is classified as an adverb if it is used to modify a verb in the sentence.

Helping verbs may appear as: is, are, be, such as, was, were, been, being, have, had, has, do, did, does, can, could, will, would, shall, should, may, must, might, etc. In generative grammar, a verb phrase may consist of just a single verb.

The answer is both. The first one follows the standard rule. But the second is also accepted, and many writers would prefer it because it sounds more natural. Therefore, when the subject after there is or there are is a list of items, you can make your verb agree with the first noun in the list.

Detect passive verbs in Word 2010

1. Set the Proofing options. Go to File – Options – Proofing .
2. Go deeper into the Settings. Click Settings.
3. Start typing a document. As you finish a sentence, Word may underline a passive verb in green.
4. Run a spelling and grammar check.
5. Look at your score for Passive Sentences.

In a passive sentence, the person or thing doing the action (the actor) is usually preceded by the word “by.” For example: Anita was driven to the theatre by Carla. Nowadays, black kites are protected by law. The olives are stoned and crushed in this room by my son.

Click the Spelling & Grammar tab. Then, under Grammar, click Settings, and clear the Passive sentences check box. In Word 2007, click Settings on the Proofing tab, and then clear the Passive sentences check box. Click OK two times.

The passive voice is often maligned by teachers and professors as a bad writing habit. Or, to put it in the active voice, teachers and professors across the English-speaking world malign the passive voice as a bad writing habit.

To avoid using passive voice and start using active voice, start by figuring out the verb in the sentence. This will make it a lot easier to spot passive voice in your own writing and avoid it. The verb is the action word in the sentence, and it can be either active or passive.

Passive voice often creates unclear, less direct, wordy sentences, whereas active voice creates clearer, more concise sentences. To change a sentence from passive to active voice, determine who or what performs the action, and use that person or thing as the subject of the sentence.

The indicative mood is a category of verb forms that we use to state facts. Examples: “Joe plays outside.” (The speaker thinks it’s a fact.) “It will rain soon.” (The speaker thinks it’s a fact.)

In a sentence using passive voice, the subject is acted upon; he or she receives the action expressed by the verb. The agent performing the action may appear in a “by the…” phrase or may be omitted. The dog is acting upon the sentence subject (the boy), meaning it uses the passive voice.

Parallel structure (also called parallelism) is the repetition of a chosen grammatical form within a sentence. By making each compared item or idea in your sentence follow the same grammatical pattern, you create a parallel construction.
