Indian Sign Language (ISL) is used in the deaf community all over India. But ISL is not used in deaf schools to teach deaf children. There is no teaching material that incorporates sign language.

When European colonists “discovered” America, they found that Natives used a sign language to communicate between tribes that spoke different languages. The most widely used variety of Native American sign language is known as Plains Indian Sign Language (PISL).

Algonquian languages

A number of them returned in the 1890s and early 1900s. In the 21st century, the Comanche Nation has 17,000 members, around 7,000 of whom reside in tribal jurisdictional areas around Lawton, Fort Sill, and the surrounding areas of southwestern Oklahoma.

There were more than 30 separate tribes, each with its own language, religious beliefs, customs, and way of life. They were as culturally varied as the European immigrants who settled the North American continent. Some of these tribes were mobile, ranging over a large region in pursuit of bison.

In addition to aiding communication between the deaf, PISL was used for a broad range of interactions—for hunting and other activities where silence or secrecy might be desirable and for trade between groups whose languages were not mutually intelligible as well as between Indians and Euro-Americans.

On the Plains, a sign language developed to allow for trade and easier communication among the many different Indian nations in this area. Sign language was the lingua franca for trade among the different tribes.

Tactile Sign Language: People can use one-handed or two-handed tactile sign language. People who grew up using ASL in the deaf community may prefer tactile ASL, while others who came from an oral background or learned signs later may prefer a more English-based tactile system.
