Quentin Tarantino scrapped his Star Trek 4 script to get on board The Movie Critic because it had more impact and meaning.

Quentin Tarantino explains why Star Trek could be his last film

Quentin Tarantino may easily be one of the most brilliant yet discerning filmmakers in Hollywood. Moreover, he makes sure that every film that bears his name is exceptional and devoid of mediocrity. That is the only explanation for the director's earlier statements that he hopes to make ten excellent films and leave Tinsel Town with a well-curated legacy in film history.

It was previously reported that Tarantino would direct JJ Abrams' Star Trek 4 as his final film. But the director left that project to come on board with The Movie Critic. Screenwriter Mark L. Smith explained the director's thinking behind this in a previous interview.

For Tarantino, quality is above all else. That is the main reason why, unlike many directors who continue to work behind the lens for years, he wants to finish with ten films. His reasoning for this is that he wants to reduce the risk of him directing low-quality films (via Cinema Blend).
