Valium is an anti-anxiety drug that is part of a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Benzodiazepines interact with a type of receptor in the brain called gamma-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors. GABA receptors slow nerve signals in the brain that lead to anxiety. This creates a calming effect when benzodiazepines such as Valium are present.

Do not use Valium to treat other complaints unless your doctor says to. Be careful if you are elderly, unwell, drinking alcohol or taking other medicines. Some people may experience side effects such as drowsiness, confusion, dizziness and unsteadiness which may increase the risk of a fall.
