IT help desk workers are increasingly being targeted by cybercriminals – a trend researchers have described as "the most remarkable" of the past year.

It's not a new phenomenon, nor is it carried out in a very sophisticated way, notes Red Canary's latest threat report, but the trend is growing and miscreants are seeing greater success rates.

Keen infosec watchers will recall last year that the ransomware attack on MGM Resorts was, by the attacker's own account of the situation (make of that what you will), orchestrated by phishing an IT help desk worker in just 10 minutes.

The same cybercriminals, tracked by the Scattered Spider moniker, used the same tactics with a host of other Okta customers as well, in what became one of the biggest security sagas of 2023.
