Star Trek: The Motion Picture (1979) was the long-awaited big screen comeback of "The Original Series". But despite the huge anticipation, both critics and fans had different opinions. The film's slow pace, heavy storytelling and vague premise drew criticism from general audiences. Added to this was Leonard Nimoy, who was also not a fan of the film.

Time and time again, Nimoy described his love and hate for his Star Trek character Spock. But not only his character; the actor also expressed strong opinions about why he doesn't consider Star Trek: The Motion Picture a franchise-worthy film.

Leonard Nimoy was not one to mince his words. In his autobiography, I Am Not Spock, he tried to establish that the half-human, half-Vulcan character was not his only identity. Furthermore, while speaking to the Television Academy Foundation, he emphasized that he was initially happy that the Star Trek franchise was coming because the writing and scripting had gone terribly. But with relief, he had also expressed his disappointment that the series could have been much better with a stronger script.
