James Cameron's billion-dollar baby that is the Avatar franchise started way back in 2009 with the visually stunning epic that made up the first iteration. With the first attack by humans on the naturally blessed planet Pandora in 2154, Cameron has often described his epic creation as a historical retelling of North and South America during the early colonial period.

However, with the release of its 2022 sequel, The Way of Water, Cameron was criticized in part by native communities, who argued that the film effectively glamorized colonialism and was disrespectful with its depiction of the blue aliens who called Pandora home.

Of course, that kind of stance had also been taken with respect to the original, and Cameron had tried to make improvements with his portrayal for the sequel. But after being criticized after the release of The Way of Water, the acclaimed director, while appreciating the historical struggles of the natives, suggested that they were wrong, even if he himself did not want to be the messenger.
