Leaders of the world's most prominent AI companies are being recruited to the Homeland Security Department's new advisory group.

Officially called the Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board, the group will advise the US government on a wide range of AI-related issues. The guidance would not only apply to national security, but also electricity consumption (which is an issue on the horizon for AI) and manufacturing, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The board will reportedly meet for the first time in May and intends to meet once per quarter.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said that while AI can bring enormous benefits to the United States, improper implementation of AI-based technology can have consequences. "Failure to deploy AI safely and securely and responsibly when it comes to critical infrastructure can be devastating," Mayorkas said.
