Microsoft says it's working on Windows to allow endpoint security solutions to work outside of the operating system's core, all with the goal of preventing any future CrowdStrike-like mega-outages.

Microsoft acknowledged the calls from customers and vendors to do this and noted a number of challenges that must be overcome for the new features to meet requirements.

Non-kernel performance needs and protection against tampering are among the issues requiring attention, and Microsoft said it would consider requirements for security sensors and secure-by-design as it seeks to improve Windows.

The news comes from the company's non-press security summit held this week. It seems Microsoft heard the angry hisses of the vultures and decided to make the details of the summit public after hinting last month that they might not be.
