First announced during Minecraft Live 2021, the fireflies were supposed to be part of the Minecraft 1.19 update. The developers intended for them to play in the new mangrove swamp biome alongside frogs in Minecraft. If they were introduced to the game in time, they would have been food for the frogs and possibly a mechanic to create frog lights.

Other than that, due to their design and glowing body, they would also have been a great aesthetic mob for the night. In terms of design, the fireflies were literally two square particles, making them the smallest mob ever planned for Minecraft.
