Gege Akutami explains the death of a major character from Jujutsu Kaisen.

Why did Nanami die in JJK?

When the second season of Jujutsu Kaisen was released, Gege Akutami built up a bad reputation for killing off some of the main characters from the series. From Kugisaki Nobara to Toji Fushiguro, Akutami removed several fan-favorite characters that made Jujutsu Kaisen fans hate them a lot.

While the deaths of these characters were certainly depressing, none of them compare to the tragic passing of Kento Nanami, the first class wizard of Jujutsu High. Namani was one of the most popular characters in anime history, as not only fans but also prominent manga creators such as Tite Kubo developed a love for the character.

His death still haunts Jujutsu Kaisen's fans, and although Akutami couldn't bring him back, they had an explanation for his death. The manga recently revealed that they killed off Kubo's favorite character Jujutsu Kaisen due to their loyalty to the readers of the manga, and there was a scenario where Nanami could have died much earlier in the story.
