New Nintendo teaser is 'inappropriate for some users'

Emio – The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club Teaser – Nintendo Switch

A new teaser trailer for something called Emio is already one of the weirdest things Nintendo has ever done. On Wednesday, the family-friendly game maker posted a 15-second teaser that focuses on a ghostly mystery man wearing a smiling paper bag mask. Worryingly, Nintendo has flagged the video as age-restricted and, in some countries, prefaced the trailer with the warning that it "contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing."

The only other thing shown in the video, outside of the creepy, trench-coated man, is the kanji 笑み男, which means emio, or "smiling man."

Nintendo fans are baffled as to what Emio is, with some joking that it's edgy viral marketing for the Switch 2 or speculating that it's a first-party Nintendo horror game. Naturally, Hideo Kojima's name is thrown around, since teasers are his trade. (Kojima is already busy with Death Stranding 2, OD, and Physint.)
