The semiconductor shortage during the pandemic was real, with prices making them virtually "untouchable". While that's history at this point, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is playing the long game. A new Bloomberg report reveals that Altman wants to raise "billions" to create a chain of factories for AI chip manufacturing.
OpenAI's CEO is reportedly seeking trillions of dollars for a new AI chip project
Altman believes there's only so much industry-leading foundries like TSMC, Intel and Samsung can do when it comes to making AI-centric chipsets in the future. That's why he wants to create a "network of AI chip factories," according to the report.
That would directly put OpenAI in the big league competition, right alongside Google, Microsoft, Amazon and the like. These giants have been making their own control circuits for some time now, instead of using off-the-shelf processors.
Moreover, companies like Google taking a completely custom route for their chipsets only prove that the AI industry is reaching new heights every day and requires such experiments. Previously, Google used Samsung's foundry to build its Tensor chipsets. Now, with the next generation Tensor G5, they will probably release them for TSMC.
