But many players are already feeling a little frustrated that skill-based matchmaking, which drove many people away from XDefiant as well, will be retained in the upcoming title.

Skill-based matchmaking is one of those systems that works or doesn't work on a case-by-case basis. Historically, it's almost always been seen as hampering the dynamism and fun factor of a multiplayer shooter, locking players into a rigid progression path.
