Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight had a score that was both addictive and haunting for fans. The Joker theme stood out in the film and the legendary Hans Zimmer was predominantly behind the score. Zimmer worked alongside James Newton Howard on the film but their work on the film was mostly split. While Zimmer worked on the Joker theme, Howard was assigned to do the score for Harvey Dent's arc.

Nolan was given a plethora of options as Zimmer was looking to come up with a point that defined the psychopathic character. Some of the most soulful musical interpretations in cinema were born from the collaboration between the duo Nolan and Zimmer, who worked together on six films.

Hans Zimmer wanted a score for Joker that audiences would absolutely hate in The Dark Knight. In his quest to find the defining point of the psychopathic character, Zimmer found two notes that ultimately did the job. He used a cello to achieve this tone.
