Interview Redis is the most popular database on AWS, which is of course the most popular cloud. The fact that the relatively little-known database, launched in 2009, is punching above its weight against well-established rivals may owe a lot to its reputation as a hands-on cache developers know and love. Yet in recent years it has struggled to be much more.

The Redis feature you didn't know you needed

The in-memory database vendor, as readers will recall, switched to a dual-licensing approach, imposing more restrictive terms, earlier this year. The company now says this has allowed it to introduce more innovative features, which it says promise an 80 percent cost reduction in call memory and smoother, more efficient handling for GenAI.

In March, Redis—the company formerly known as Redis Labs—announced that starting with 7.4, Redis will be dual-licensed under the Redis Source Available License (RSALv2) and Server Side Public License (SSPLv1), whereas previously it had fallen under the BSD 3- clause license, a more permissive arrangement that allows developers to use the code commercially without paying, a stance that has been the subject of some debate.

The decision followed a string of database vendors opting for so-called open-source licenses to reduce the risk of third parties – particularly cloud providers – using the open source code to provide rival database services.
