Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University have come up with a technology that gives sensitivity to lips, teeth and tongue in the metaverse. If implemented at scale, the technology has the potential to enhance the immersive experience of virtual worlds. This is how it works!

According to the researchers, the system uses airborne ultrasound waves to create sensations on the lips, teeth and tongue. It can produce haptic effects, including point impulses, sweeps and sustained vibrations directed at the mouth.

The unit consists of a phased array of 65 sensors. Best of all, it can be attached to the underside of VR glasses, eliminating the need for an additional stand-alone accessory.

To demonstrate the capabilities of the oral haptic system, the researchers demonstrated various activities such as drinking water, brushing teeth, feeling raindrops and even walking through spider webs. "Every time you lean down and think you should feel the water, you suddenly feel a rush of water over your lips," said Vivian Shen, a second-year doctoral student. student at the Robotics Institute.
