British outsourcing provider Serco has appointed Tom Read, head of the central government's digital agency, to the role of group director of digital and technology.
The rise of the digital manager
Read has been CEO and Director General of the Government Digital Service (GDS) in the Government Office and was responsible for steering the digital strategy across the government and the wider public sector.
He will take up the role with the controversial outsourcing provider and will take on responsibilities including Serco's digital and cyber security strategy, IT infrastructure and the introduction and scaling of new technology platforms.
In addition to his role at GDS, he has worked as Chief Digital Officer at the Ministry of Justice, as CTO at the Department of Business and previously held technical roles at Guardian News and Media and Lloyds TSB.
