Along with nymphs who danced in mountains, forests and marshes, Artemis was a personification of the ideal athlete. She used to not only hunt and kill but protected them, especially the young, which earned her the title Mistress of Animals, as can be observed through various writings of Homer. The role of Artemis broke out of the realm of myth by being a mistress of the wild, and she proved to be the favorite goddess among the rustic people.
