The thing to bear in mind is everyone’s equipment is different, there’s no hard and fast rule to pickup height simply because all pickups have different levels of output. Pickups work the same way in relation to distance from the actual strings.

Pickup height is a critical element of your guitar’s tone. Set too low, and your pickup is inefficient and weak. Set too high, and your pickup will cause all sorts of problems for you.

The “action” of your guitar — meaning the height of the strings off the fretboard — definitely affects your guitar tone. The higher the action, the more open your instrument sounds. High action can often increase sustain and give your notes a nicer resonance than a lower action.

Pickup tilt is normally adjusted to get the bass-treble output balance where you want it. Individual pole pieces are then adjusted to get the desired string-to-string balance. Overall height of pickups is adjusted to find the sweet spot, and also to get the desired balance between the neck and bridge pickup.

Start by setting all of your guitar pickups to 3/32” (0.093”, 2.38mm) on the bass side and 2/32” (1/16”, 0.0625”, 1.98mm) on the treble side. Remember, this is the space between the top of the pole piece and the bottom of the string, held down at the last fret.

The P-90 (sometimes written P90) is a single coil electric guitar pickup produced by Gibson since 1946. The Fender style single coil is wound in a taller bobbin but the wires are closer to the individual poles. This makes the P-90 produce a different type of tone, somewhat warmer with less edge and brightness.
