The 2017 Major League Baseball season will be remembered for the elaborate cheating scheme the Houston Astros engaged in throughout a season they would end with a World Series championship. So they crunched a bunch of data and concluded that this complicated cheating scam didn’t actually help them win the World Series.

MLB Will Not Strip Astros, Red Sox of World Series Title Commissioner Rob Manfred announced as much on Wednesday, saying that he would uphold the “long tradition in baseball of not trying to change what happened.”

Yes, the Astros cheated during the 2017 World Series. Confirmed, Dodgers fans. Great.

April 2017: Astros implement ways to communicate stolen signs. By the start of the 2017 campaign, MLB’s report says, the Astros had fully committed to stealing signs electronically. At first, this happened by relaying information to runners on second base, who then signaled incoming pitch types to batters.

The Astros wRC+ was the same value, 121, at home and away. It appears that sign-stealing via trash-can-banging did not significantly impact the Astros’ walk rates, strikeout rates, or wRC+ when comparing their home and away games.

Electronic sign stealing is illegal and cheating and should never happen again. It shouldn’t have happened in the first place. We should point out there’s a long history of players trying to cheat like this and it goes back decades (search the 1960s White Sox for one example). It’s not just the 2017 Astros.
