Titian was the greatest painter of 16th-century Venice, and the first painter to have a mainly international clientele. During his long career, he experimented with many different styles of painting which embody the development of art during his epoch.

He handled the paint increasingly broadly, creating a mosaic like effect, with patches of colour. Titian’s influence on later artists has been profound: he was supreme in every branch of painting and revolutionized the oil technique with his free and expressive brushwork.

Renaissance

Although often described as an innovator, Titian was influenced by a slew of Italian artists, from his teacher Giovanni Bellini to the great Michelangelo.

Titian worked almost exclusively in oil, which was a new technique at the start of his career. The medium allowed him to build up a series of glazes to depict the appearance and texture of the human form with an accuracy, delicacy, and softness which was innovative.

Italian

Titian continued to paint until his death, on August 27, 1576, in Venice. He reportedly died of the plague. The same illness had claimed the life of his son, Orazio, a few months later.

Painting

Casa di Tiziano, the 16th-century house that Julia and her partner, Claude Buchert, a French internet entrepreneur, bought in 2001, is also where Venice’s most famous artist, Titian, lived for 49 years, until his death in 1576.

Fondamenta Nuove

Dada was born out of negative reaction to the horrors of the First World War. This international movement was begun by a group of artists and poets associated with the Cabaret Voltaire in Zürich. Dada rejected reason and logic, prizing nonsense, irrationality and intuition.

Images of Dadaism drive the spectrum of collage, a work of pure abstraction. Dadaist paintings were influenced by some movements that directly upgraded Dadaism, such as analytical Cubism, collages, and works by abstract painters such as Kandinsky.
