The layoffs that have hit the team behind the Until Dawn Remake, a game that hasn't even been released yet, are symptomatic of a much bigger problem.

Recently, Ballistic Moon, the studio behind the upcoming Until Dawn Remake, announced that some of its staff would be laid off – before the game was even released. The game is scheduled for release on October 4, 2024, but just weeks before launch, the company posted the news on LinkedIn.

As outrageous as that is, it's not exactly surprising anymore. Sudden layoffs have become alarmingly common in the gaming industry. Aside from how devastating they are from a humane standpoint, they are simply not the solution to whatever problem C-suite executives think they have.

The Ballistic Moon and the Until Dawn Remake incident comes on the tail of layoffs at Ouka Studio, the team behind Visions of Mana (released August 29, 2024).
