Feature In April, attorney Christine Dudley was listening to a book on her iPhone while playing a game on her Android tablet when she started seeing in-game ads that mirrored the audiobooks she recently checked out from the San Francisco Public Library.

Using Facebook's ad library to analyze political ads

Her audiobook consumption, she explained, had been very focused the previous month, focused on a specific subgenre that she doesn't think would come up by chance.

"You don't come across mobile ads by accident [for that particular subgenre]," she told The Register. "These ads made me extremely angry."

Concerns about the privacy of library reading materials date back to the early 20th century, Dorothea Salo, academic librarian and library school instructor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, explained to The Register.
